Community Service Our guild is very active in helping those in need in our community. Photos from some of our projects can be found here. Here are a few examples of how we help others: 2006 Projects Our first community service workshop was held Saturday, April 29 where we worked on the rag dolls for orphans in Russia. A local church mission took these dolls to Russia in June. We also worked on the Longbranch Elementary "Heartprints" Quilt which consists of hand prints from students, teachers and school staff. We cut out over 600 hands that day. The quilt will be unveiled at this year's quilt show on July 21-22, 2006. Our primary community service project this year is making pillow cases for children and elderly in need in the Ellis County area. Kits are being produced from our guild's donated "stash" for members to pick up at the next few meetings and bring back to the following meeting. We plan to have a "Pillow Case Parade" at each meeting during Show and Tell. Our Community Service Chair has challenged our members to make and donate 300 pillow cases this year. Our first delivery has been made to area children. We plan to put small necessities (school supplies, socks, underwear, toiletries, etc.) in each of the pillow cases prior to giving them away. Click here for directions to make a pillow case with french seams. 2005 Projects Community service workshops were held on Saturday, April 9th at St. Paul Episcopal Church and Saturday, October 15th at Quilts 'N More. We constructed small lap quilts for use at Children's Medical Center and Parkland Hospital. The guild provided batting and the novelty fabric samples were donated by a distributor for Hoffman and Timeless Treasures. Leftover fabric has been pre-cut into kits for members to construct at home and return at the future meetings. 2004 Projects Quilt Show-Miniature Quilt Auction: At our 2004 quilt show, members made and donated miniature quilts for a silent auction. Proceeds from the sale of the quilts were donated to the Ellis County Meals-on-Wheels program. As a follow up in the fall, approximately 25 lap quilts were constructed and donated to the Meals-on-Wheels program for distribution to its clients in need. Donation to St. Paul: Members created another beautiful quilt for St. Paul to raffle. The "Flying Geese" quilt was raffled at the church's Mardis Gras celebration in February 2005. Christmas Gift Drive for Area Nursing Homes: Guild members brought gift items (toiletries, socks, pajamas, slippers) to our Christmas party and these items were distributed to area nursing home residents. Donation to Ellis County SPCA: A guild member made a quilt top for the recently formed SPCA Animal Shelter to raffle. The guild donated backing fabric and quilting services. Troop Quilts: In the fall of 2004, a fellow quilter from Mesquite, Lori Shelton, visited our guild and explained the "grass roots" effort she began to make mini autograph quilts for soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. She made one of these for her brother and all his buddies asked for one as well. She had so many requests that she solicited help from area guilds, and our members made many quilts and delivered them to her at our meeting in October. Trudy Coker, our Community Service Committee Chair and a teacher at Red Oak Jr. High, told her students about these quilts and the kids wanted to make them as well. On Veteran's Day, Trudy's students held an assembly and the kids donated their quilts to Lori for delivery to troops by Christmas. Thanks to the combined effort of area guilds and Red Oak students, Lori was able to deliver over 200 quilts to troops during the Christmas holidays. 2003 Projects Tote Bags for Children in Foster Care: It came to our attention that area children going into foster care had to leave their homes often without notice. Their few belongings were transported with them in small plastic grocery bags or cardboard boxes. Members quickly got together at a workshop and created over 125 drawstring tote bags in brightly-colored novelty prints. Donation to St. Paul: Members also got together at a workshop to create a quilt for St. Paul Episcopal Church to raffle. The "Buzz Saw" quilt was raffled at the church's Octoberfest celebration in October 2003. It is pictured here prior to quilting.
